Trophies

THE N.B. CHALLENGE PLATE
This silver plate was presented to the Club by Laura Henry and is named after the horse called Bracken which was owned by fellow member, the late Monica Dudson. Laura used to put Bracken’s name down on entries as “NB Bracken” – explaining that the “NB” stood for “Nae Brakes” – hence the name of the trophy. Appropriately enough, Laura was also the first person to win the trophy in 1996, albeit on another horse altogether.
The competition is for Intermediate level horses and is part of the Summer Points.

The competition was first held in 1998.

THE FINLAYSON MEMORIAL TROPHY
The FINLAYSON MEMORIAL TROPHY is awarded annually for the best WORKING HUNTER at the Members Show. It was first awarded in 1990 and was donated to the club by Ronnie Finlayson of Kirkcaldy in memory of his late wife, WILMA. Wilma had been a keen & enthusiastic member of the club for many years and ended up as the Club Treasurer. Her ability to give an instant update on the state of the bank balance at the drop of hat was legendary. So much so that people used to go out of their way to ask "So, how much money have we got today?" - back would come the answer - £317.64" , or whatever - she always knew the exact balance , down to the last penny. Wilma was a very gregarious person and always made a beeline for any new people who appeared at the field for the first time. She often did a bit of stewarding and particularly liked stewarding the Working Hunter Classes at our various shows and Wednesday night competitions. She had a bit of a "thing" for wee Jackie Cochrane who often came along to judge - as she was only about 5 foot as well, they had quite a lot in common!! Sadly, Wilma fell seriously ill in late 1988. She was diagnosed with cancer in early 1989 and died in May of the same year at only 41 years of age. Anyway, that is why we now have the FINLAYSON MEMORIAL TROPHY at our Members Show

THE TRIGGER TROPHY
The Trigger Trophy is a relatively new trophy first awarded in 2005 and presented annually at the Spring Hunter Trials to the winner of the ADULT OPEN section.
It is a very handsome silver quaich which was donated anonymously by a member who possibly once owned a horse by the name of Trigger. We can't say any more than this as the member is insisting on being a mystery. This years winner was Hannah Dickinson with Kilmahog. We have a picture of the trophy - click below for a peek

The ANIVAD TROPHY
This trophy has been in the club for donkey's years. It was presented by Mrs Davina Gray of Freuchie and is awarded at the Members Show to the winner of the open showjumping. There's a clue in the donor's name - try spelling Davina backwards..........

The Alan ASHBY TROPHY
This is a magnificent silver rose bowl - definitely one you would like on the mantlepiece! It is a replica of the original solid silver trophy which is awarded annually at the British Riding Clubs National Championships to commemorate the time Fife RC WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS in 1986. The team comprised Ron Brady, Lorraine Brady, Mary Dryburgh and Susan Gardener. The trophy is competed for annually at the Members Show and is run on the same three round format as the Championships

The CHAPMAN TROPHY
This is arguably the most handsome of all our many trophies. It is unique in that it is not a cup but a Beswick limited edition model of the legendary steeplechaser Arkle with jockey Pat Taffe up. It should in reality be called the Elanco Trophy but it is always referred to as the Chapman after the donor - Reg Chapman - who used to live at Strathore House by Thornton. He was into chickens. Reg was a keen rider and supporter of the club way back in the early 70's. I recall he used to ride at Christine Robert's Riding School at Brunton Barns, Markinch and he ended up buying one of her best horses - Pablo. Sadly, Reg's whereabouts nowadays are not known. In those days, the club used to run their Hunter Trials at Strathore - hence the trophy - which continues to be presented for Novice Hunter Trials at the Spring competition
This trophy nearly came to a nasty end earlier in 2007 when the previous winner posted it back with virtually no protection; the result was that when Donna opened the box, the trophy came out in several pieces. We thought it was beyond repair but thankfully committee member Ailleen Walker managed to find a restorer who has miraculously put it back together so well that you would never know it had been so badly damaged.
The trophy was first presented in 1975, making it one of our oldest awards

The LYN PERRERS TROPHY
This trophy is competed for annually and is awarded to the winner of the NOVICE POINTS COMPETITION which runs throughout the summer season.
It was presented by Lyn Perrers. Lyn served on committee at one time. She was a keen supporter of the points classes - so much so that she was known to have turned up on horseback with a broken leg ( the plaster was carefully wrapped up in a plastic bag for protection) - to make sure she got her attendance points! That was before committee decided that points would only be awarded to horse & riders who actually participated

The ARTHURLEA TROPHY
The Arthurlea Trophy was gifted to the club by Mrs Davina Gray of Freuchie to be competed for annually for Best TURN OUT. It was a condition of donating the trophy that the club did not charge for the class - and so, the Weds night Turn Out competition is the only free class in the calendar. The trophy is named after Mrs Gray's house when she lived in Kingskettle

The GALWAY TROPHY
The GALWAY TROPHY is one the club's most recent acquisitions having been donated in 2007 by Hannah Seaton in the name of her horse, Galway (or Galway's Request to give him his full title)
Galway was a "well kent face" - and not just at FRC. In his younger days he was a useful dressage horse who competed at the Scottish Dressage Championships on more than one occasion. Many people will also remember him from his days at the Glenrothes Riding Centre, where he could sometimes be "challenging" in a fun sort of way. In his later years he was gifted to Hannah and became a regular at the Club Field.
A handsome grey, Galway was everyone's favourite and was always the centre of attention wherever he was; if you forgot to give him a treat, a nudge in the back soon put you right. Thanks to Hannah's horsekeeping skills he remained very active well into his 30's; you can see him in action on our Album page
Galway lived to a very ripe old age passing away at around 35 years at the end of 2006
Galway was undoubtedly Hannah's horse of a lifetime and to celebrate this special horse she kindly donated a magnificent trophy in his name. It will be presented annually to the horse nearest the Optimum Time at our Wednesday night mini cross country competition. The first winner in 2007 was Jacqui McAdam and Almost Autumn

This is still under construction. We hope to provide details of the trophies which the club have for the various competitions, together with a bit of background as to where they came from.
This may help answer questions like
Why is there a trophy at the members show called ANIVAD ? What is the significance to the club of the Alan Ashby Memorial Trophy?
Come back to this page soon and hopefully you will be able to find out the answers to these and many more questions
